Gandalf crosses the Sarn Ford by alarie-tano Gandalf crosses the Sarn Ford by alarie-tano
Watercolor, 40 x 22.5 cm

Sep. 28th 3018 Third Age: Gandalf the Grey reaches the Sarn Ford in the South of the Shire. At the same day some miles north the four Hobbits are captured by a Barrow-wight and later rescued by Tom Bombadil.

This was first meant to be just a study of the river for a larger image. But in the end I exaggerated it and decided to call it a finished painting.

I love how stylistically the overall look of your paintings is sort of a blend of Alan Lee and John Howe, and I appreciate how it is more substantial than Lee but less...I dunno... solid? I guess than Howe's.

Gorgeous springy colours and soft light. I especially love the detail of the spraying water. I love seeing people do depictions of scenes that don't get much attention in art.

This is so gorgeous, I am thrilled by how you are using that golden light... Amazing technique! The leaves, the bark, the grass, the water... Wow!

Do you use any sort of masking fluid in your work?

I must learn to work on my lighting... :D

Thanks very much.
I use masking fluid (in this picture for example for the water splashes), but mostly I'm too lazy to apply it.

This is beautiful! It has a sense of urgency. But the backround is so warm and the light is so ambient and warm. It's almost as if you feel you could jump into the scene.

Beautiful. And you create a beautiful world in what many artists make a grim or urgent feeling scene.
It almost makes you want to stop and rest, but Gandalf moves along.

Thanks Inki! This scene was meant to look rather peaceful as it's at the edge of the shire before the war had started.
