The Blue Beards by alarie-tano The Blue Beards by alarie-tano
One of several illustrations for Morbidus War Game Project of Sophian Epic.

They are an elite guard. when i doodled a bit for them i got the idea that they could protect the entry to an important hall which reminded me at an epic painting by John Howe. Inspired by that I searched the web for medieval carvings which led me to pictures of the Urnes Stave church, Sogn, Norway, on which the carvings on the doors in this painting are based.

Hope you like it.

Hi there! In general the process is like this: First get some color on the complete painting. This is a rather translucent layer of mostly up to two or three colors. In this case this was probably some light brown, ochre in the middle and possibly some blue at the bottom. All these colors are applied in one wash on a previously dampened paper (take a huge wall-painters brush and soak the whole paper). After this first wash, there usually follows a second and in large more complex paintings perhaps even a third. More washes aren't possible usually, because on the one hand the paper will not endure them anymore and secondly the colors will become very dull.

After the washes, it's detail work. Smaller brushes, less translucent color. Finally you can highlight smaller sections with colored pencils. In this case I used a white crayon as you can see in the serpents on the door.

Also it is kind of important what colors you use. I used Ecolines from Talens. (In Germany, you can order them here: suche.gerstaecker.de/search.js…) I discovered that this process does not really work with other kinds of watercolors like Schmiencke.

Best of luck! ;)
