Well the story I had in mind:
The dragons were killed by something and turned to stone. Either they were pierced by spears or they turned to stone as the sunlight hit them them. However.
After they were dead, people build the stone monuments of angels around them. (Which are actually inspired by the statue of St Michael infront of the Völkerschlachtdenkmal in Leipzig, Germany.) With the time passing, trees began to grow on the monuments.
